On Tuesday, the FDA banned the sale of candy, fruit, and clove flavored cigarettes. (Menthols were not included in this ban.) The theory is that only minors smoke these types of cigarettes. Of course, I'm not sure why there aren't harsher punishments for shops that sell cigarettes to minors, like there are for shops that sell alcohol to minors. And, of course, this ban was backed by Phillip Morris, one of the largest cigarette companies in the US. So this looks less like a "save the children" campaign and more a "put the competition out of business" campaign. Well, there are still cigars (Rocky Patel has some vintage cigars that look interesting...but I quit smoking about a decade ago) and flavored pipe tobacco. I wonder how many flavored cigarette smokers will move to those.
